SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

FAREWELL, WALLY

Wally Parks, the driving force behind the formation of NHRA in 1951 and its first president, died Sept. 28. He was 94. It was Parks’ vision, goals, and unconditional commitment that made NHRA what it is.

THE COUNTDOWN IS ON

NHRA world champions were crowned under a new format, the Countdown to the Championship, for the first time, with the top eight drivers from the first 17 events vying for titles over a four-race playoff.

DOWN TO THE WIRE

Points battles went right down to the wire at the NHRA Finals, where all four Professional championships were decided on the final day of the season, two of them in final rounds.

UPS, DOWNS FOR JOHN FORCE RACING

After team driver Eric Medlen died in a testing accident in March, John Force collected his NHRA-record 125th event win in Sonoma, then suffered a season-ending top-end accident in Dallas in September.

Ashley Force Hood

The eldest daughter of class legend John Force made NHRA history by becoming the first woman to reach a Funny Car final at the fall event in Las Vegas. She also reached the semifinals on three other occasions, qualified No. 2 three times, and finished 10th in points.
