SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

FIRST FOUR-SECOND FUNNY CAR

During qualifying for the Sears Craftsman NHRA Nationals in Topeka, Kan., Chuck Etchells became the first Funny Car driver to cover the quarter-mile in less than five seconds with a barrier-busting 4.987 blast.

FIRST 300-MPH FUNNY CAR RUN

Jim Epler became the first Funny Car driver to exceed 300 mph with a blast of 300.40 mph at the Sears Craftsman NHRA Nationals in Topeka, Kan. The previous best speed ever recorded was 295.27 mph.

FORCE FINALLY WINS INDY

After 15 fruitless attempts, Funny Car legend John Force finally won the prestigious NHRA U.S. Nationals, defeating second-year driver and Japanese native Kenji Okazaki in the final round.

ANDRETTI GOES STRAIGHT

Circle-track racer John Andretti, nephew of motorsports great Mario Andretti, reached the semifinals of Top Fuel in his debut in Atlanta at the wheel of former Major League Baseball player Jack Clark’s dragster.
