SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

NHRA WELCOMES WINSTON

Winston’s title-rights series partnership with NHRA, which lasted 25 years, was announced in May at a press conference in Los Angeles. Winston’s involvement officially began at the NHRA Springnationals.

‘JUNGLE JIM’ WINS IN E-TOWN

Rain delayed the start of the NHRA Summernationals until 6:30 p.m. Monday and was not completed until 2 a.m. Tuesday when “Jungle Jim” Liberman scored his only NHRA Funny Car win.

NHRA ENTERS THE NORTHWEST

The first NHRA national event held in the Northwest, the NHRA Fallnationals in Seattle, ended with Pro wins by Gary Beck, Don Prudhomme, and Bob Glidden. It was the season’s penultimate event.

RECORD-BREAKING FINALS

The Winston NHRA World Finals at Ontario Motor Speedway featured the first 5.6-second and 250-mph Top Fuel runs, the first five-second and 240-mph Funny Car passes, and the first all-five-second Top Fuel field.
