SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

FIRST POINTS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Gary Beck, Shirl Greer, and Bob Glidden won the first NHRA world championships decided solely by points accrued over the season. Previously, winners of the NHRA World Finals were crowned world champs.

WHO WON INDY? EXACTLY.

Relatively unknown 32-year-old Oklahoma television repairman Marvin Graham upset the Top Fuel field at the NHRA U.S. Nationals that forever earned him the nickname “Marvin Who?”

SPORTSNATIONALS MAKES DEBUT

NHRA hosted its first Sportsman-only event, the NHRA SPORTSnationals in late May at Beech Bend Int’l Raceway in Kentucky. The event, which featured scores of new national records, was a huge success.

DRAMATIC FUNNY CAR TITLE

Shirl Greer returned from a qualifying fire that left him badly burned and his car nearly destroyed to earn enough points to win one of the most dramatic Funny Car championships ever.
