SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

‘SUPER SEASON’ ADDS THREE EVENTS

NHRA added three new national events to create a seven-race “Super Season” schedule, with the NHRA Gatornationals, NHRA Summernationals, and NHRA Supernationals added to tour nearly doubling 1969’s four-race itinerary.

PRO STOCK BECOMES OFFICIAL CLASS

NHRA made sweeping changes to eliminator category names, including the introduction of a “heads-up Super Stock” class that was named Pro Stock. Bill Jenkins won the first race at the NHRA Winternationals.

WILD INDY TOP FUEL FINAL

Don Prudhomme won the NHRA U.S. Nationals Top Fuel title for the third time in one of the most dramatic finals in history as runner-up Jim Nicoll’s car was sawed in two by an exploding clutch.

FIRE SYSTEMS IN FUNNY CARS

Starting in June, NHRA mandated that all nitromethane-burning Funny Cars be equipped with an onboard fire extinguisher system following a rash of fires the two previous seasons.
