SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

GARLITS WINS INDY, SHAVES

Don Garlits vowed not to shave until he ran in the sixes, which he did in the final round of the NHRA Nationals, then, in an iconic moment, shaved his beard on the starting line.

FORD-POWERED WINNER IN TOP FUEL

The “Bounty Hunter,” Connie Kalitta, was the class of the field at the 7th annual NHRA Winternationals with an eye-opening string of 7.20-second performances at the wheel of his Ford OHC-powered Top Fueler.

'SNAKE' VS. 'MONGOOSE' THRILLER

Tom “the Mongoose” McEwen beat Don “the Snake” Prudhomme in the final round at Carlsbad Raceway’s NHRA World Series event after both had made legitimate six-second passes earlier in the event.

RECORD-BREAKING INDY PURSE

NHRA announced an expected record purse of $100,000 for the 1967 NHRA Nationals in Indianapolis, $2,000 of which was earmarked for the Top Fuel champ. The purse later soared to $150,000.
