GARNER: NHRA’S FIRST WORLD CHAMP
NHRA crowned its first world champion, Buddy Garner of Hobbs, N.M. The title was determined by the participant who achieved the most wins during the 26-week season.
HARRIS WINS NATIONALS TOP ELIMINATOR TITLE
Leonard Harris, driving his Albertson Olds entry, won the Mr. Eliminator title by defeating the Tennessee Bo-Weevil A/Modified in the Top Eliminator final in Detroit.
INDIANPOLIS RACEWAY PARK OPENS
Located 11 miles from downtown Indianapolis, Indianapolis Raceway Park, the future home of the NHRA Nationals, began operations in the fall. Seventy years later, it remains the event’s home.
