SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

DRAG SAFARI, YEAR TWO

The Drag Safari embarked upon its second nationwide crusade, an 18-week, 20,000-mile tour, helping sanctioned strips present 18 official Regional Championships.

RACING TAKES THE SPOTLIGHT

Although NHRA’s main goal had always been the unification of hot rodders, drag racing soon became NHRA’s calling card.

FIRST NATIONALS

NHRA staged its first National Championship Drags, Sept. 29 through Oct. 2 on the 8,000-foot runway of the Great Bend (Kan.) Municipal Airport, where Calvin Rice became NHRA’s first national champion.

INSURANCE MATTERS

NHRA provided a key weapon in the growth of tracks by working with major insurance companies to provide general liability and participant coverage for NHRA-sanctioned dragstrips.
