The NHRA Drag Safari, a four-man team towing a trailer full of the equipment necessary to stage events, took off on a three-month, 12,000-mile national tour to help establish dragstrips.
STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
The inaugural California State Championship Drags was held at Madera Airport, leading NHRA to proclaim that each of the 48 states should host its own championship in 1955, culminating in a National Championship drag meet.
STANDING STARTS
NHRA hosted a Drag Strip Council, attended by representatives of outstanding strips, where, by unanimous vote, standing starts were voted in as a requirement over the sometime use of rolling starts.
POSITIVE PR
The sport received a huge boost in attention when Jack Webb’s popular Dragnet radio program aired an episode concerning hot rodding that portrayed the enthusiasts in a very positive light.
