The Pomona strip hosted the first official NHRA-sanctioned event, the Southern California Championship Drags, April 11-12. The event drew a stunning turnout of more than 15,000 spectators.
RULES CONSOLIDATION
Because every track had its own rules and even track length, NHRA began to create a common set of rules and regulations to unite the sport.
IMPORTANT FRIENDS
NHRA membership reached the 15,000 mark, and U.S. Secretary of the Interior Douglas McKay was that member, having been awarded honorary membership at NHRA.
INSURANCE
NHRA worked toward recognition from insurance underwriters that hot rodders were “safe risks” and aided in the staging of the 1953 NHRA Bonneville Nationals in September.
